Chennai had a terrible start to the Indian T20 League 2022, losing their first four games in the tournament. But in their last match against Bangalore, Chennai regained their form as they won their first match of the tournament.

Although the men in yellow have managed a win in the tournament, their woes with the bowling have not ended yet. They are visibly struggling from the lack of a potent bowling option in the powerplays. This void in the team has been created as their star pacer and INR 14 Cr buy, Deepak Chahar suffered a right quadricep injury in the West Indies series ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian T20 League. It was expected that Chahar would recover and join the Chennai team by mid-April.

But in recent reports, it was revealed that Chahar has suffered a back injury during his recovery at the NCA in Bengaluru. The intensity of the injury and his period of absence from action was however not confirmed. But as per the latest reports by the Times of India, the latest scans suggest that Chahar won’t be seen in action for at least four months. As a result, the right-arm pacer will not only miss out the entire Indian T20 League 2022 but also his T20 World Cup 2022 participation falls in jeopardy. The T20 World Cup 2022 is scheduled for later this year in  October-November in Australia.

Deepak Chahar was an important part of the Chennai team for the last few seasons. His ability to swing the new ball and pick up wickets in the powerplays made him an indispensable part of the yellow army. His absence has thus put Chennai’s bowling attack under pressure in the season so far. His probable unavailability in the T20 World Cup 2022 will surely be a setback to India’s plans for the tournament.
