Lucknow faced Mumbai in the 37th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The encounter turned out to be a one-sided affair as one team dominated the other completely.

Mumbai won the toss and decided to field first in the match. Lucknow did not have a good start to their innings as they lost Quinton de Kock (10 off 9) in the fourth over of the innings. Manish Pandey joined KL Rahul and they stitched a partnership of 58 runs. It was a steady partnership with both the batters rotating the strike and taking occasional risks. Manish Pandey was dismissed in the 12th over of the innings when the team’s score was 85. Wickets kept falling after this but the skipper KL Rahul was going strong at the other end. There was a period of play where Lucknow lost three wickets for just 19 runs. Rahul’s determination was immovable though and he completed his second successive century against Mumbai in the tournament. He remained unbeaten 103 runs off 62 deliveries hitting 12 fours and four sixes. On the back of his brilliant hundred, Lucknow was able to score 168 runs in their 20 overs.

Mumbai had a steady start to their chase as the openers looked solid in the middle. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan formed a 49 runs partnership for the opening wicket within the first seven overs. Kishan (8 off 20) was the first wicket to fall for Mumbai in the eighth over. Mumbai lost their way after this and was down to 67 for four in 11.2 overs. The big names in Rohit Sharma (39 off 31) and Suryakumar Yadav (7 off 7) were already back in the hut. The onus of taking Mumbai home depended largely on Kieron Pollard at this stage. After 15 overs Mumbai was stationed at 98 for four needing 71 runs off 30 balls. Tilak Varma was looking in good touch and Pollard was out in the middle keeping the hopes alive for Mumbai.

But Pollard was finding it difficult to middle the ball and it was only Varma who was doing the catch up for Mumbai. As, the West Indian kept playing out deliveries without much of an intent in his batting, the pressure kept mounting on Mumbai. The pressure ultimately got into Tilak Varma as he was dismissed in the 18th over by Jason Holder. Varma played a fighting knock of 38 runs off 27 deliveries but it was not enough on the day. Pollard (19 off 20) struggled through the entire duration of his stay at the crease as Mumbai finished at 138 for 8 in 20 overs. The losing streak for Mumbai now extends to eight matches, while on the other hand Lucknow picked up their fifth win in eight matches.
