‘Country where ex-PM is not safe, they expect India to travel’ – Fans spark Asia Cup 2023 debate yet again as Imran Khan gets shot during political rally
A while back, Indian Cricket Board and Asian Cricket Council president, Jay Shah announced that India won’t travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023. He cited both teams not being allowed to play in each other’s political territories in this day and age. In reply, Pakistan Cricket Board threatened to pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup if the next year’s Asia Cup was moved out of Pakistan.
After this, the Pakistan fans argued that their nation is safe to host cricket. They also cited the example of hosting the likes of England, Australia, the West Indies, etc. On the other hand, several former Indian cricketers and fans argued about how their neighboring country is unsafe. However, in an interesting turn of events, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot on November 3.
Fortunately, the bullet hit Khan’s leg and missed the vital organs thanks to a Samaritan in the crowd. After this, Khan and his political party PTI supporters have run a riot on the streets. A video of a man spitting inside Pakistan army tanks s going viral.
Pakistan to host Asia Cup and Champions Trophy in future
At the moment, Pakistan is set to host the Asia Cup in September 2023 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. However, after the Imran Khan incident, it is highly likely that the Indian Cricket Board will ask the ACC to move the continental cup out of Pakistan. After all, the incident has given fuel to Indian fans and Jay Shah’s sentiments of not letting their national team play in Pakistan.
Also, one Twitter user feels that this incident might have killed Pakistan’s chances of hosting the continental cup. It will be interesting to see how World Cricket Governing Council reacts to Champions Trophy 2025 hosting rights.
This is how Twitter reacted
Whosoever attacked Imran Khan has pushed Pakistan Cricket on backfoot. Even former Prime Minister isn't safe. It's a major security loophole that England, West Indies and other nations might consider. ICC will be under pressure too for Champions Trophy.#AsiaCup2023#ImranKhan
