Recently, it was reported that Pakistan skipper Babar Azam‘s captaincy might be stripped off in some formats. At this point, he is the leader of the Asian side across formats. In 2019, the right-hander replaced Sarfaraz Ahmed as captain of white-ball cricket. Next year, he became captain across formats as he was alleviated as Test captain, replacing now-retired Azhar Ali.

Also, not to forget, the Lahore player captained Karachi Kings in the last year’s Pakistan Super League. With more than three years into his captaincy for the national side, Azam might have to share his job with other players on the team. The higher-ups in the Pakistan Cricket Board are reportedly looking to split the captaincy across formats. Apparently, they are unhappy with the 28-year-old captaincy.

In Test cricket, the team failed to win a single Test at home while hosting the likes of Australia, England, and New Zealand. Before the grand home season, the fans were excited to see these teams play in front of them after years, only to be disappointed. The Babar Azam-led side won only one game in 2022, against Sri Lanka.

Apart from this, the team could only reach the semis of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 due to the Netherlands pulling off a shocker against South Africa. Meanwhile, the recent on and off-the-field events might trigger the removal of Babar from captaincy in specific formats. Last December, Najam Sethi replaced Ramiz Raja as the PCB chairperson. The new regime has already replaced the selection committee.

Shan Masood’s alleviation as vice-captain strengthens Babar Azam’s removal reports

Ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, Shan Masood was alleviated as vice-captain of the ODI skipper. With Shadab Khan not available due to a finger injury, Masood was given the responsibility. However, the left-hander, Shan only played the last ODI. This has further strengthened the reports of Babar Azam’s removal as captain. Meanwhile, the fans are backing the latter.
