Former England Test skipper Joe Root isn’t known for his T20 game. The last he played for the Three Lions in the shortest format was in 2019. Even though he plays for Trent Rockets in The Hundred (England’ premier shorter format tournament), he wasn’t a hot property going into the T20 Leagues globally. However, he was signed by Rajasthan during the last round of the Indian T20 League player auction in 2023.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing inaugural season of the International League T20, the 2019 ODI World Cup winner is playing for Dubai Capitals. In the game against Gulf Giants, the right-hander played two different kinds of scoops. The incidents happened in the second and third overs of the Capitals’ innings. Root first played reverse scoop, followed by a conventional scoop

However, apart from the scoop shots, the game was disaster for the visitors. After putting the Giants to bat first, they conceded 181/6. Thanks to skipper James Vince (78) and Shimron Hetmyer (37), the Gulf reached such total. For Dubai, former Sri Lanka international Isuru Udana and Akif Raja took two wickets each. On the other hand, Afghanistan international Mujeeb Ur Rehman and West Indies player, Rovman Powell took one each.

In reply, the Red brigade, Dubai was all-out on 80, losing the game by 101 runs. Nine out of their 11 players failed to cross the double-digit mark. For the home side, David Wiese and Chris Jordan took three wickets each. Apart from this, England player, Richard Gleeson took two while Rehan Ahmed and Sanchit Sharma took one each.

“We probably though earlier that 140-150 was par, but Hettie and Dawson going off at the death helped us get to 180. It’s a difficult role, particularly on a wicket like that. Lucky to have him. He has the firepower, he has the quality and he does the job consistently.

[On the bowlers] It’s hard to single one out. As a bowling group we were exceptional. I thought we had plans and we practiced and we executed very well. We planned on going back of a length and did that well. One thing talking about it but to go out and do it, absolutely superb,” Gulf Gaints skipper James Vince said after the game
