‘Main bowling toh Ambani ne karni hai’ – Fans react as Lasith Malinga appointed as Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach for IPL 2024
The veteran pacer Lasith Malinga is appointed as the new bowling coach of Mumbai Indians. The former Mumbai Indians bowler will be the third bowling coach of the Mumbai Indians in the last few years after the likes of Zaheer Khan and Shane Bond, who have a legacy of producing world-class bowlers from Mumbai Indians for the Indian Premier League and the Indian team.
Lasith Malinga played in the Indian Premier League for only one team – Mumbai Indians. The former Sri Lankan bowler played for Mumbai Indians in IPL from 2009 to 2019. The unorthodox bowler is the highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in the history of the Indian Premier League. The legacy of the express pace bowler is unmatched in the league.
The multiple Indian Premier League winner has a name for himself as a bowler, especially in the death overs. The trait of Malinga was used well by Rajasthan Royals, who had the veteran bowler as their bowling coach for the 2022 and 2023 seasons of the Indian Premier League. For the 2024 season, Malinga is set to return to the Mumbai Indians.
Improvement in the bowling of Rajasthan Royals
Malinga played 122 matches in the IPL and claimed a whopping 170 wickets at a sensational bowling average of 19.80, a bowling strike rate of 16.63, at an economy of just 7.14. The impressive thing about Malinga is his sheer brilliance in the death overs. The 39-year-old was the best death bowler in the IPL for a long time and is arguably the best bowler in the history of the league.
Under the coaching of the Galle-born bowler, Rajasthan Royals had a great bowling attack in the period 2022-23. Trent Boult and Prasidh Krishna were very good with the new ball. Kuldeep Sen assisted them well. In the middle overs, the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal did wonders for the Royals. In the death overs, the Royals got Sandeep Sharma, Kuldeep Sen, Jason Holder, Obed McCoy, and others to bowl the difficult overs.
