Afghanistan and Bangladesh recently encountered each other for the 3rd match of the ODI World Cup 2023 on 7 October, Saturday in Dharamshala. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first and successfully dismissed Afghanistan’s batting lineup within 37.4 overs.
Afghanistan opening batsman, Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored the highest runs along with Azmatullah Omarzai and they scored 47 and 22 runs off 62 and 20 deliveries with a strike rate of 75.81 and 110, respectively. The other opening batsman Ibrahim Zadran also scored 22 off 25 balls. Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz both had the three-wicket haul to dismiss Afghanistan for 156 runs.
Afghanistan failed to defend the low target of 157 runs in 50 overs and Bangladesh won the game. The team’s mid-order batsmen Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto led the team towards the victory in 34.4 overs and Shanto became the highest scorer for the team by scoring 59 runs off 83 deliveries. Bangladesh sealed an easy victory against Afghanistan by 6 wickets.

“It’s a great moment for me, I’ve done a lot of hard work in the past. Credit to the team management because they believed in me. I was a bit cautious, the captain told me to bowl in the right areas. He told me to be consistent and to focus on my own performance so credit to the captain. I took it ball by ball and didn’t look at the runs. Wicket was turning a bit, I just tried to play straight. I’ve always batted at no.8 so a great moment for me to bat at the top of the order. They tried me at the top of the order in the last few matches and it’s a great moment for me”, said Mehidy Hasan Miraz as he was awarded as the Player of the match.
“Very happy with the way we played. We believed if we got a wicket, we could come back in. Wasn’t easy for few players, but happy with the way we batted and bowled. We have been practising here. We need to adapt to these things (tough outfields) if we want to win. We got three, four fast bowlers, they can change any game and I hope they will bowl well in the upcoming games, it’s a long tournament. He (Mehidy) has been playing very well. Shanto is another one in the dressing room, they always want to perform well for the team”, said Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.
