Former West Indies skipper and Mumbai’s household name, Kieron Pollard has decided to retire from the Indian T20 League. The decision is made on an immediate basis with Mumbai looking forward to building their team for the 2023 season. On November 15, the teams will announce their retentions ahead of the player auction, to be held on December 23. Meanwhile, with only hours left in the player retention deadline, Pollard has decided to step away.

Talking about his career in the cash-rich league, he played for the five-time winners from 2010 to 2022. In these years, the team battled mega auctions in 2014, 2018, and 2022. However, he was always one of the players who got retained. However, this year, he couldn’t justify his retention with the bat. After playing 11 games, the right-hander could only manage 144 runs at an average of 14.40. Not to forget, he was dropped in three games.

This was one of the rare occasions when the team decided to bench the Trinidadian. Notably, in the middle of the 15th season played early this year, he decided to say goodbye to international cricket. Several months after this, the 2012 20-20 World Cup winner decided to bid adieu to Mumbai as a player. Pollard announced his decision on Twitter and wrote a long note.

I will take up the role of batting coach: Keiron Pollard

After retiring from the game, the five-time Indian T20 League winner has said that he will be the batting coach of the team in 2023. He added that he will continue playing for the MI Emirates, the team’s franchise in the International League T20 in the UAE.

“This is not an emotional goodbye to Mumbai as however I have agreed to take the role of batting coach in the ITL as well as play with MI Emirates. This next chapter of my career is genuinely exciting and allows me to transition myself too from playing to coaching.”
