“Arey yrr jo football ko soccer bolte hai wo bhi Messi ko dekhenge” – Fans react as Lionel Messi joins Inter Miami FC ahead of the upcoming season
As his contract with Paris-Saint German is set to end this summer, Argentina superstar Lionel Messi announced joining Major Soccer League. He will be participating from Inter Miami FC, which is a bottom-ranked team in the league. The 35-year-old Argentine forward has spent the last two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, where he will play his final game on Saturday.
Notably, he spent the majority of his career in Barcelona FC. The MLS and Inter Miami both acknowledged the news on social media, while the American league stated that “work remains to be completed to finalise a formal agreement.” I’ve taken the decision that I am going to Miami, I don’t have (the deal) 100 per cent sealed or maybe there’s something left to do, but we decided to continue our path there,” Messi told Spanish newspapers Diario Sport and Mundo Deportivo.
“I decided to leave Europe. After winning the World Cup and not being able to go to Barca, it’s time to go to MLS to live football differently and enjoy my day-to-day life more. Obviously with the same responsibility and desire to win, and to do things well, but with more calm”, he further added.
Barca fans left disheartened
As Messi decided to move to America fans who were expecting a reunion at Barcelona were disappointed. Messi has won the Ballon d’Or seven times and is poised to win it again after leading Argentina to a World Cup triumph in Qatar in December 2022.
The football world was waiting for Messi’s decision after PSG stated this week that the playmaker, widely regarded as the best player in history, was leaving. The romance of a return to Barcelona and the chance of eye-watering riches in Saudi Arabia faded as Messi chose to join MLS, with sun-soaked Miami a location he has previously vacationed in.
Speaking about money in Saudi he said, “If it had been a question of money, I would have gone to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere,” said Messi. “It seemed a lot of money and the truth is that my decision went another way and not for money”, he further added.
Here is how fans react to Messi’s decision:
Big news for US football.
