In the fifth Test of the Ashes 2023, England beat Australia by 49 runs to draw the series 2-2. After the game, fans and former cricketers praised England’s Bazball approach and called it one of the biggest advertisements for Test cricket. Meanwhile, England coach Brendon McCullum also believes that the performance of his team validates the Bazball approach.

It’s worth noting that the special attacking approach of the English team has helped them remain undefeated in any Test series in the last year. “I think both sides have stayed true to their styles, and that’s what makes a great heavyweight fight,” says McCullum.

“It’s two different styles with total conviction in them. When you look back to when the skipper (Stokes) was thinking, ‘Would we be able to take on a great Australian team—and they are a great Australian team—and go toe to toe with them?’ I think the answer is yes, and that’s a tremendous confidence booster for the group”, he further added.

It’s been a great six weeks: Brendon McCullum

Speaking about the future challenges McCullum said that the next Ashes is far away, and his team has a lot of challenges before that. “I think we should go round again and have another five Tests; keep doing what we’re doing,” McCullum said. “It’s been an incredible six weeks, and I’m really proud to be sharing a dressing room with the England boys”, he further added.

“The next Ashes is obviously a little way away (in 2025), and there are certainly different challenges to cross before then. If we look at the growth of the team in the last 14–15 months, it has been quite significant”, McCullum added.

The Ashes 2023 witnessed an incredibly close five-match Test series, with Australia securing two thrilling victories. One by two wickets and another by 43 runs, while England responded with a three-wicket win in the third Test and a 49-run victory in the fifth Test. Remarkably, three of the four completed Tests were extended to the fifth day.
