Ashwin-Jadeja shatter new record; surpass legendary Indian spin duo during 1st Test against England
During day one of the first test match of England’s tour of India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad from 25-29 January 2024, the Indian spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja made a unique record. The spinners duo became the most successful spin duo in the country, surpassing legendary spin duo Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
Ashwin and Jadeja collectively hold a record of taking 504 wickets for India together in international cricket as the previous record holders Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh held the record for years as they took 501 wickets together for India in test cricket. Both Ashwin and Jadeja sent back three English batters on day one, however, they made the record when Ashwin took two wickets while Jadeja dismissed Ollie Pope for a single.
Ravichandran Ashwin analyzes day one of IND vs ENG First Test Match
After day one of the first test match, Ravichandran Ashwin talked about the game and said, “It was pretty interesting in the first session, maybe there was a bit of moisture. Because of the early moisture, there was enough speed in the pitch in the first session. Then it slowed down. The ball that spun … not have enough speed to carry through to the slip fielders. You need to mix your pace up and be extremely consistent for you to not be giving runs in this pitch.”
“240 was a very very good competitive total I thought. When we left the field, I was thinking probably 30-40 runs more than what we would have liked. The start that Jaiswal and Rohit gave us is making us breathe a little easy. Someone going on and making a hundred tomorrow will put us in the driver’s seat”, Ashwin added.
While talking about Jaiswal, he said, “That’s the beauty of playing this sport at this level. Somebody breaks through the system, doesn’t have any excess baggage, had a great time in the IPL, had a wonderful start to his first-class cricket. He’s literally not put a foot wrong. He’s walked into Test cricket, he’s taken it like a fish to water. His carefree approach is enabling him to play some wonderful shots. I am quite enjoying it.”
