IPL 2022: BCCI allow teams to retain four players, new franchises can pick three players outside the auction
The BCCI have revealed the retention policy for the IPL 2022. As we reported earlier, the teams can retain a maximum of four players, including three Indians and two overseas players, with maximum retention not exceeding 4. As far as the new franchises are concerned, they can pick three players, including two Indian and one overseas player outside the auction.
Also, the salary cap for the franchises have been set at 90 crores. The BCCI also revealed that if the team opts to retain four players, a total of 42 crores will be deducted from the purse. In case of three, two and one retentions, 33, 24 and 14 crores will be deducted respectively.
The eight franchises need to submit the list of retained players before 30th November, while the new franchises will have a window between 1st December to 25th December to pick the players.
The board also revealed the salary cap of each retained player. The chart of the same has been given below.

In case the salary is more than the set amount, the extra amount will be deducted from the remaining purse of the franchise. “The sums set out above are the minimum amount(s) which will be deducted from a Franchisee’s Salary Cap. If the League Fee agreed with a Retained Player set out above exceeds the relevant sum set out above, then an amount equal to that higher League Fee shall be deducted from the relevant Franchisee’s Salary Cap. If the League Fee agreed with a Retained Player is less than the relevant sum set out above, then an amount equal to the relevant sum set out above shall be deducted from the relevant Franchisee’s Salary Cap.”
