‘Bhai saans lene ka mauka toh do’ – Fans react as Liverpool defeat Tottenham Hotspurs 4-3 in Premier League thriller
On Sunday, Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in the Premier League to increase their chances of making it to Europe with a last-second goal from Diogo Jota. Tottenham’s defence faltered for the second consecutive Sunday as Liverpool jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes. However, the visitors surged back, and substitute Richarlison’s late header appeared to have given his team an improbable point.
However, Jota, who had also been brought on as a substitute, capitalised on a mistake by Lucas Moura to stun Tottenham and push Liverpool past the Londoners into fifth place in the standings. Curtis Jones gave the hosts the lead after only three minutes of a tumultuous first half, and two minutes later, Luis Diaz’s goal caused another breakdown in Tottenham’s defence.
The competition for the final European places is intense in Premier League
Tottenham appeared to be headed for a repetition of their embarrassing performance against Newcastle United last Sunday when they gave up five goals in the first 21 minutes and were destroyed 6-1. The visitors quickly came alive, though, and Harry Kane volleyed past Alisson in the 39th minute. Shortly after, Son Heung-min was denied by the upright after early departures from Spurs fans and chants of “we want our money back.”
After the break, Tottenham’s bad luck continued as Son and Cristian Romero both saw shots rebound off the post in quick succession. A tense conclusion that had previously seemed implausible was set up when Son ran clear to make it 3-2 in the 77th minute after Liverpool had finally appeared to have regained control.
Richarlison, a former forward for Everton, drove the Tottenham supporters into a frenzy when his glancing header rebounded into the goal. Still, their jubilation quickly turned to disappointment as Jota defeated Fraser Forster with a skilful patient shot.
Tottenham has 54 points from 34 games, while Liverpool has 56 points from 33 games. The fourth-placed Manchester United, who have played one fewer game than Liverpool, are still seven points ahead of them. The teams who place fifth and sixth will probably earn a spot in the Europa League the following year.
Here’s how fans reacted:
Richarlison thought that his first goal for Spurs wouldn't have come at a better moment, only to find out that it was countered in next minute. What a match it was!! #LIVTOT @premierleague
