On Wednesday, India A defeated Bangladesh A by 31 runs to win the first Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging Asia Cup 2023 in Hong Kong. Rain hampered the maiden edition of the ACC Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Only six of the 17 games (including the final) produced outcomes, with the rest being cancelled. During the competition, there were over four amber alerts in Hong Kong, which prevented a full-fledged tournament from taking place.

Shreyanka Patil and Mannat Kashyap excelled with the ball after a quiet batting performance to lead India U-23 to the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup T20 championship with a 31-run triumph against Bangladesh in the final here on Wednesday. Having elected to bat, India scored a modest 127 for seven before the bowlers rose to the occasion, with Patil (4/13) and Kashyap (3/20) taking seven wickets between them to dismiss Bangladesh for 96 in 19.2 overs.

Kanika Ahuja took 2 for 23 and was another off-break bowler who contributed two wickets. The Indians dominated on a slow Mission Road Ground surface, with off-spinner Patil and slow left-arm orthodox Kashyap dominating the roost. Sobhana Mostary and Nahida Akter both hit 16 runs for Bangladesh, with Nahida Akter being stuck on 17 not out. Dinesh Vrinda scored 36 off 29 balls and was India’s leading scorer, while Kanika Ahuja stayed undefeated on 30 off 23 balls.

Only four Indian batsmen reached double figures, with Bangladesh spinners scooping up wickets at regular intervals, preventing India from forming any meaningful partnerships. Aside from Vrinda and Ahuja, the only two Indian hitters to achieve double figures were wicketkeeper U Chetry (22) and skipper Shweta Sehrawat scored 13 runs. Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Nahida Akter took 2 wickets for 13 runs and off-spinner Sultana Khatun took 2 off 30 both took two wickets for Bangladesh.

India advanced to the final after their quarterfinal versus Sri Lanka was called off due to rain on Tuesday. In an unusual turn of events, India played only one game in the lead-up to the final, a nine-wicket victory against hosts Hong Kong. India’s other three matches, including the semifinal versus Sri Lanka, were called off due to rain.
