‘Comeback ho toh aisa hona chahiye’ – Fans react as England beat Australia by 49 runs at Oval to level series 2-2 in Ashes 2023
England defeated Australia in the fifth and final Test match of Ashes 2023. The hosts completed a brilliant comeback to level the series 2-2 after being down 0-2. Chris Woakes was awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant performance in the match. He was also awarded the Player of the Tournament for his brilliant all-round performance along with star Australia bowler, Mitchell Starc.
If we talk about Day Five, Australia resumed their innings from 135 for no loss. The visitors started off the day well but once they started to lose wickets, then it was only England who were cruising towards victory. They bundled out the Australian team at a score of 334. The highest scorer for their side was their openers, Usman Khawaja and David Warner.
He did an amazing job in the first two Test matches he came in: Ben Stokes
Where one side Khawaja played a knock of 72 runs from 145 balls with eight fours and Warner scored 60 runs off 106 balls with nine fours in his innings. Former Australia skipper, Steve Smith also scored a crucial 54 runs in 94 balls with nine fours but it was not enough to take his team over the line.
“Feel really good. 2-2 is a fair reflection at the end of the series. Australia, WTC champions, absolute quality team. Don’t think many teams would’ve been able to respond like we did after being 2-0 down. Very proud of the entire team and the effort they put in. Having played a lot of cricket here, you know what it’s like in the 4th innings,” England Test skipper, Ben Stokes was quoted as saying in the post-match presentation.
“Australia played really well yesterday but turning up here and knowing that you still need 250 runs is really tough. The wickets came in clusters like they usually do. Our mentality was great. Real good, the way in which Woakes has come in. Not only with the ball but also with some crucial runs. He did an amazing job in the first two Test matches he came in. Wood could barely walk today, he was very sore but he gave it his best and still said he was ready to bowl,” the England all-rounder added.
