Cricketing Fraternity left in disbelief over an umpiring howler in County Championship

Kent vs Hampshire (image source: Twitter)

Kent took on Hampshire at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury in a County Division 1 game. Hampshire won the match by an innings and 51 runs. But besides the results, something else has grabbed the attention of the cricketing fraternity. It was an umpiring mistake that triggered a response from one and all.

The incident offered in the 80th over of Kent’s second innings when Jordan Cox was batting on 64. Hampshire’s off-spinner Felix Organ bowled a full-length delivery outside the off-stump that Cox padded away. The bowl lobbed in the air and Joe Weatherly fielding at forward short log grabbed an easy catch. While the players appealed it was quite evident that the ball has missed the bat by a mile, shocking everybody the on-field umpire adjudged the batter out.

The clip of the dismissal went viral soon and everyone who watched it could not believe the massive error. Many active and retired cricketers also responded to the video. English all-rounder Ben Stokes commented ‘What…. how Nope.”

Besides Stokes other members of the cricketing fraternity such as Graeme Swann, Liam Livingstone and Sam Billings also responded to the umpiring howler. Notably, Decision Review System (DRS) is not used in County Championships. This umpiring howler has induced the debate about the introduction of DRS in the competition.

Speaking of the match Hampshire dominated the game in all aspects. Kent. Batted first in the match and scored 305 runs on the back of a brilliant 149 runs by batter Daniel Bell-Drummond. In reply, Hampshire posted a humongous total of 652 runs for the loss of six wickets in their first innings taking a lead of 347 runs.

Hampshire’s skipper James Vince, Liam Dawson and Ben Brown scored centuries as Dawson finished as the highest scorer of the innings with 171 runs. Kent was bundled out for 268 runs in the second innings and they lost the match by a margin of an innings and 51 runs.
