Amidst India’s dominant wins in the first two Tests of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy, there has also been a lot of talk about the form of Indian opener KL Rahul. The hosts have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in a four-match Test series, but there hasn’t been any big contribution from KL Rahul till now. The 30-year-old has scored only 38 runs in three innings and hasn’t shown great form over the past few months.

However, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma continues to back KL Rahul and said that the team is backing him and they are aware of his capability. Fans are also mad at the Indian Cricket Board for backing Rahul despite Shubman Gill being in rich vein of form in the past few months.

The 23-year-old recently hit a double ton in ODI and a T20I century against New Zealand. He has shown consistent performance against Sri Lanka and New Zealand and was the Player of the Series in ODIs against the Kiwis.

“Of late, there has been a lot of talk about his batting. For us, as team management, we always look at the potential of any individual, not just KL. I was asked in the past about a lot of players. If a guy has potential, he will get an extended run. Not just KL. If you look at the couple of hundreds he got, especially at Lord’s, batting on that damp pitch. Centurion was another win. Both came in India winning both games. That’s the potential he has,” said Rohit in a press conference after the match.

“Obviously, of late, there have been a lot of talks. But, from our side, it was clear that we want him to go out and play his game and do what he can do the best, that we have seen him do over the years,” the Indian skipper further added.

“Of course, when you are playing on pitches like these, you need to find your method of scoring runs. As I said, different individuals are part of these teams and they will have different methods of scoring runs. Find your own methods of doing this. We are not going to look into what one individual is doing, but rather what the entire team is doing. This is an important series for us, a big one, and that’s my thought on KL,” Rohit concluded.

India won the second Test match against Australia by 6 wickets in Delhi. Ravindra Jadeja was awarded Player of the Match for his tremendous bowling performance. The leg spinner took 3 wickets in the first innings and registered his career-best figures in Tests in Australia’s second innings, taking 7 wickets for 42 runs. Australia were bowled out for 263 in the first innings and took a lead of 1 run after India were bowled out for 262 runs.
