‘Dekha Jersey ka kamal – Fans react as Mumbai Indians defeat Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets in IPL 2023
After defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) in the last match at Arun Jaitely Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai on Sunday, April 16. In this fixture, the MI’s regular Rohit Sharma did not play in the first innings as he is suffering from a stomach bug, and in place of world number one T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav led the side. The five times champion won the toss and elected to ball first.
The visitors, batting first, finished the innings at a score of 185 runs with a loss of six wickets. The highest scorer for Knight Riders was star India all-rounder, Venkatesh Iyer, who scored 104 runs off just 51 balls which included nine sixes and six fours in his innings. He became the second KKR batter to score a hundred after former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, who scored 158 runs off 73 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) back in 2008 in the first encounter of the Indian Premier League.
Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav guided Mumbai Indians to victory
KKR captain Nitish Rana and Mumbai Indians right-arm off-break Hrithik Shokeen got into a heated argument. Rana went down the wicket to attempt a spinner on the first delivery of the ninth over, but completely missed it and gave a comfortable catch to Ramandeep Singh. Nitish Rana conversed briefly with the Mumbai Indians spinner while Shokeen celebrated his maiden wicket.
For the home side, the pick of the bowler was Shokeen, who snapped two wickets in his spell of four overs, where he conceded 34 runs in his spells. One wicket each was grabbed by Cameron Green, Duan Jansen, Piyush Chawla, and Riley Meridith while conceding 20 runs, 53 runs, 19 runs, and 40 runs respectively in their spells.
MI chased down the target on the fourth ball of the 18th over with five wickets in hand. The highest scorer for the home side was Ishan Kishan who scored 58 runs from 25 balls with five fours and five sixes. The stand-in skipper Suryakumar scored runs off 25 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes. Tilkak Varma also scored 30 runs from 25 balls with 3 fours and a six.
