‘Dhoni back, Chennai back’: Twitter excited to see Chennai win on MSD’s return as captain
Hyderabad and Chennai squared off in the 46th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The batters enjoyed the conditions and gifted the fans with a run feast. A total of 380 runs were scored in the match.
Hyderabad won the toss and decided that they will chase in the match. Chennai opted for a new opening pair in Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad. The new pair did wonders for the team and helped them to a mammoth total. At the beginning of the innings, Devon Conway looked to settle down, rotating the strike in the process. While Ruturaj Gaikwad played the job of the aggressor and took on the bowlers. In the first six overs, the duo put up 40 runs. As the fielding restrictions were lifted the duo started to make a mockery of the Hyderabad bowling.
Records kept tumbling down as the duo put on a partnership of 182 runs for the first wicket. Ruturaj was the first wicket to fall in the 18th over after scoring 99 runs off 57 balls. He hit six fours and six sixes during his stay. Devon Conway however continued with his antics till the end of the innings and remained unbeaten on 85 off 55 deliveries. Chennai finished with a mammoth total of 202 runs for the loss of two wickets from their 20 overs.
Hyderabad started their chase with a blaze as the openers set up a fiery fifty runs partnership for them. But it was Mukesh Choudhary who applied the brakes on Hyderabad’s progress with two successive wickets in the fifth over of the innings. The wickets to fall were of Abhishek Sharma (39 of 24) and Rahul Tripathi (0 of 1). Aiden Markram was looking good during his short stay of 10 deliveries in which he scored 17 runs. But his stay was cut short by Mitchell Santner and his departure put Hyderabad in a spot of bother 88 for 3 in the 10th over. The skipper of the team Kane Williamson was batting steadily on him and the hopes of the team were on him and the big-hitting West Indian Nicholas Pooran. Hyderabad lost their skipper in the 15th over. Kane Williamson scored 47 runs off 37 deliveries before walking back. As the over finished Hyderabad was 131 for four requiring 72 runs off 30 deliveries.
The hopes of Hyderabad were on the shoulders of Nicholas Pooran. But wickets fell at the other end and Pooran was left high and dry at one end. He gave his best scoring64 runs of 33 balls, but it was not enough to win Hyderabad the match. They finished at a score of 189 for 6 losing the match by 13 runs. Mukhesh Choudhary was the pick of the bowlers for Chennai picking up 4 wickets for 46 runs from his four overs. This was Chennai’s 3rd victory in the tournament in nine matches, while Hyderabad lost their fourth match in nine matches.
Notably, this match marked the return of MS Dhoni as the captain of the Chennai team for the season.
