The skipper of the Mumbai franchise, Rohit Sharma is likely to miss a few matches in the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League to manage his workload. Reportedly, Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the side in Rohit’s absence.

The five-time champions Mumbai had a disastrous season in 2022 where they finished at the bottom of the points table by winning only four out of their 14 league matches. They will be looking to get back to their winning form in 2023 and will be aiming to clinch their sixth title.

Mumbai will also be without their ace-pacer Jasprit Bumrah as he is on recovery mode after a back surgery in New Zealand. However, the arrival of Jofra Archer for the upcoming season would be a big boost for Mumbai.

According to the reports by the Indian Express, Rohit will also pick and choose the matches he will skip in the upcoming season. However, he will be traveling with the team throughout the tournament to guide Suryakumar Yadav in leading the team. Rohit also didn’t enjoy a great season last year as he scored 268 runs in 14 matches at an average of 19.14 without a single half-century to his name.

It is understood that Rohit Sharma himself took this decision in order to get prepared for the World Test Championship final against Australia, that will be held just a few days, later, after the end of the Indian T20 League. Earlier, the Indian skipper also confirmed that some players will be sent to England early as most of the teams will be knocked out of the tournament at that time. Sharma also stated that it is up to the Indian players to keep themselves fit for international matches while playing for their Indian T20 League teams.

“It’s all up to the franchises now. They own them now. We have given some indications to the teams, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the franchises. And more importantly, it’s up to the players. They are all adults; they have to look after their bodies. If they feel it’s getting a bit too much, they can talk about it and take a break in one or two games. I doubt if that will happen, but,” said Rohit as quoted by Hindustan Times.
