The second ODI between India and South Africa got underway on Sunday at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi. After taking a 1-0 lead in three-match series, South Africa was determined to clinch the series heading into the game. South African skipper Keshav Maharaj won the toss and elected to bat first.

India struck early with the ball as Mohammed Siraj cleaned up Quinton De Kock in the third over of the innings. India got their second success inside the first powerplay as well, with Shahbaz Ahmed trapping Janneman Malan in front of the stumps, leaving South Africa 40/2 after 9.5 overs.

After two early blows, Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram got involved in a 129-run-stand for the third wicket to take their team out of misery. The dismissal of Hendricks, on 74, ended the brilliant partnership. After losing his partner, Markram carried on to take the innings ahead.

South Africa was cruising at 215/3 in the 38th over. However, two quick wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram hampered their rhythm. Some late contributions from David Miller and Wayne Parnell took South Africa to a decent total of 278/7 at the end of their innings.

Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers for India, picking up 3/38 in his 10 overs. The Indian openers gave a decent start to their chase, adding 28 runs on the board before Shikhar Dhawan lost his stumps against Wayne Parnell.

Shubhman Gill also fell shortly after settling in as he departed for 28 off 26 balls. After losing their openers early Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer took it upon themselves to rebuild the Indian innings.

Kishan looked in fine form as he consistently found boundaries throughout his innings. He came really close to scoring his first-ever hundred in international cricket but fell just seven runs short of the milestone as India lost their third wicket at 209.

Kishan’s wicket brought Sanju Samson to the crease, who played second fiddle to Shreyas Iyer. The latter looked in fine knick as he brought up his century. His unbeaten knock of 113 off 111 balls took India home with 25 balls to spare. India won the match by seven wickets and levelled the series 1-1.
