New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has decided to step down from Test captaincy ahead of the Pakistan tour. He started leading the team across format after current England Test coach, Brendon McCullum decided to retire from the game in early 2016. Under him, the Blackcaps won the inaugural World Test Championship, beating India in the final last year. This time around, the team is crashed out of the final race.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Pakistan tour, starting on December 26, the right-hander has decided to step down from Test captaincy. Notably, he would continue to lead the side in ODIs and T20Is. The 32-year-old said that leading the team in Test cricket has been an honour for him. He cited workload management for such a decision.

“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in Test cricket has been an incredibly special honour,” Williamson said. “For me, Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game and I’ve enjoyed the challenges of leading the side in the format.
“Captaincy comes with an increased workload on and off the field and at this stage of my career I feel the time is right for this decision. After discussions with NZC, we felt that continuing to captain the white-ball formats was preferable with two World Cups in the next two years.”

Excited to support Tim Southee and Tom Latham as the new leaders: Kane Williamson

With the former New Zealand U19 player stepping down, Tim Southee will lead the Test side, and Tom Latham to remain as vice-captain. Notably, the latter was also a vice-captain to Williamson. Meanwhile, the WTC 2021 winner further added that he is happy to support the new leadership of the team.

“I’m excited to support Tim as captain and Tom [Latham] as vice-captain,” Williamson said. “Having played with both of them for most of my career, I’m confident they’ll do a great job. Playing for the BLACKCAPS and contributing in all three formats is my number one priority and I’m looking forward to the cricket we have ahead.”
