‘Feels good when an underdog does well’ – Fans Cheer After Zimbabwe’s Historic ODI Win Over Australia In Australia
On 3 September 2022, Australia took on Zimbabwe in the third and final match of the ODI series. Already Australia bagged the series by winning the first two matches. Hence, Australia was looking for a clean sweep of visitors. On the other hand, Zimbabwe was looking to salvage a win from this tour.
Speaking of Zimbabwe, they won both the ODI and T20I series at home against Bangladesh. They won both the series at a margin of 2-1. Then, they took on India at home. However, they lost all three matches in that series. After that, they came to Australia for this three-match ODI series. Meanwhile, speaking of the third match, Zimbabwe won the toss in Townsville and they asked Australia to bat first.
Zimbabwe won the match by three wickets while chasing 142 runs against Australia
David Warner and the Australian skipper, Aaron Finch came out to open the innings. But, Zimbabwe bowlers were in great form as they grabbed quick wickets. In 18 overs, Australia lost their five wickets for 72 runs. Then, middle and lower-order batters showed some fight. But, Australia got bundled out for 141 runs in 31 overs. Meanwhile, David Warner was the lone warrior as he scored 94 runs off 96 balls. Lack of support from others cost him and the team in the match. Zimbabwe’s Ryan Burl took five wickets for 10 runs in three overs.
In response, Zimbabwe batters started sensibly. However, they lost their first wicket at the score of 38 runs. But, they were also in a spot of trouble. Zimbabwe was struggling by losing five wickets for 77 runs. But, their skipper Regis Chakava remained not out on 37* runs off 72 balls. He ensured his team’s victory in the match. Thus, they chased down the target of 142 runs in 39 overs. With this win, they avoided a clean sweep from Australia. However, Australia won the series by 2-1. Wow! Feels good when an underdog does well.
Zimbabwe beating a full strength Australian side in Australia. Not that anywhere else would have been lesser, but at home beating Australia has to be
One of the biggest upsets in history of ODI cricket. Well done Zimbabwe. #AusVsZim pic.twitter.com/PeYDBUpi65— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) September 3, 2022
