‘Final mai sirf 92k hi aaye’ – Fans react to record attendance in ODI World Cup 2023
The biggest cricket event, ODI World Cup 2023, came to an end on the 19th of November on Sunday. Australia had the last laugh, as they overcame India in the final in front of a packed house. For most of the match, a crowd of over 92000 people was silenced by the visiting side, which controlled the proceedings on the big day. A collective team effort from Australia helped them to win the title for the sixth time.
Australia overcame India, who were unbeaten till that point in the tournament. Before the final, Cummins had claimed that in sports nothing is more pleasing than silencing a crowd of 1.3 lakh people. Cummins lived by his words, as he and the team members silenced the entire crowd with their performance. After the tournament, the official numbers for attendance have been released by the apex board.
A new record has been set for the attendance, as over 1.25 million people watched the matches in stadiums. The previous record was with the 2015 edition of the tournament, which happened in Australia and New Zealand. In the 2015 World Cup, 1,016,420 spectators watched the matches live in stadiums. In 2019, England and Wales hosted the tournament. In the tournament, about 752000 spectators watched the matches live in stadiums.
‘The event united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport’ – Chris Tetley
The record attendance has stunned everyone. It is higher than ever! In just two matches involving India, against Pakistan in the group stage and against Australia in the final, there were about 92000 or more people in the stadium. It shows the craze of sport in India and how passionate the fans are for ODIs, which is considered to be a dying format.
The head of the apex board’s events spoke about the staggering number of people who attended the biggest cricket spectacle. “The staggering attendance demonstrates the enduring appeal of cricket and the excitement the ODI format continues to offer. It has been an event that has not only entertained but also united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport,” said Chris Tetley.
