Shubman Gill made his T20I debut in the first T20I against Sri Lanka. Unlike the expectations, he failed to make an impression as he could score only seven runs off five balls. Now, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has suggested that Gill is more of a long-format player such as ODI and Tests. On his YouTube channel, the former opening batter feels that T20 cricket is not ideal for Gill.

Notably, Chopra also maintained that the rest of the T20I series against the Lankan Lions is important for Shubman. Meanwhile, the cricketer-turner-commentator, Chopra added that Gill might lead the Men In Blue in Tests and ODI in years to come.

“I feel these are very important matches for Shubman Gill. You might say that he just made his debut and you are saying that these are important games. They are important because I am willing to put my hand up and say that when I see Shubman Gill, I see him as a long-format player. The way he plays, T20 cricket is not ideal for him.”

“I see him playing Test cricket for India for many years, he might become the captain as well. He will play ODI cricket for India for many years. He might eventually become the captain there as well.”

Shubman Gill has to prove his naysayers wrong: Aakash Chopra

Chopra further added as the 2018 U19 World Cup winner has just made his debut, the latter needs to prove his naysayers wrong. The former also included himself in the naysayers.

“So he (Gill) has just made his debut but he will have to make the best of his opportunities. He will have to prove naysayers like me wrong. Ishan Kishan is batting well, so I will not say anything to him. Suryakumar Yadav got out once, will not get out every time.”
