Former India opener Kris Srikkanth believes that Ravindra Jadeja can play the same role in the upcoming 2023 edition of the ODI World Cup which Yuvraj Singh did in the 2011 Cricket World Cup, which took place in India as well. He thinks that all-rounders like Jadeja and Axar Patel will have to perform exceptionally well if India wants to lift the title for the third time.

Players with a wide range of skills have been crucial to India’s success in both of its one-day World Cup victories. India had Mohinder Amarnath, Madan Lal, and Roger Binny in 1983, while Yuvraj received the Player of the Series award in 2011 for his outstanding all-around performance. On Tuesday, June 27, the schedule for the 2023 World Cup was released. Srikkanth highlighted the importance of all-rounders while talking about India’s prospects of ending their major title drought.

“In Indian conditions, some of the wickets will turn a lot. It won’t be bouncy like in Australia or moving conditions like in England. India is used to home conditions, and that is one of the biggest advantages for the Indians. In the 2011 World Cup, you saw a lot of all-rounders coming into play,” Srikkanth was quoted as saying on India Today.

I would like to see what kind of team they are going to select: Kris Srikkant

“We had a fantastic side, very well led by (MS) Dhoni, too, and that time we have Yuvraj Singh. I believe Ravindra Jadeja will do what Yuvraj Singh did in the 2011 World Cup. I believe Jadeja, the Axar Patels of the world, these people will play a very crucial role if India has to win this 2023 World Cup,” the former India opener asserted.

Pakistan is one of the teams that could pose a threat to big teams like India, Australia and England in the major tournaments. While admitting that Pakistan is still an impressive team, Srikkanth felt that their chances of winning may be affected if they don’t play in India frequently.

“I am not ruling them out. I would like to see what kind of team they are going to select; that’s the most important thing. Pakistan has always fought well in India. The last time, in the 2011 World Cup, when they played in India, they lost to India in the semifinals in Mohali. I am not ruling out Pakistan. Yes, they are used to sub-continent conditions, but the point is, they have not played in India for a long time,” the 63-year-old stated.
