India defeated West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the first Test match of the two-match Test series, which was played at Windsor Park, Roseau, in Dominica. The debutant, Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded the Player of the Match for his exceptional performance in the match. He played a remarkable knock of 171 runs from 387 balls, which included 16 fours and a six in his innings.

“It felt very nice getting the Player-of-the-Match (POTM) award on debut. It’s been a long journey, feeling very happy and good about it. Let’s see what the future holds for me, this is just the start (of my international career). Pray to God that I continue playing like this, keep making (such) efforts, and keep contributing to the team,” Jaiswal said in the post-match interview when he received the POTM award.

He’s shown us in the past couple of years that he’s ready for this big stage: Rohit Sharma

The youngster called his father at 4:30 in the morning after scoring a century on Day Two of the Test match. His father said that they both were in tears during the talk. “He (Jaiswal) called around 4:30 am in the morning (IST) after scoring his century (Day 2). He couldn’t hold back his tears. I cried too. It was a very emotional moment. He could not talk for a long time. He was tired. He just asked me ‘Are you happy, father?’,” Jaiswal’s father was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.

The Men in Blue skipper, Rohit Sharma was present at the crease when Jaiswal registered his maiden hundred on debut. They both together built up a partnership of 229 runs for the opening partnership.

“He’s got the talent. We knew about it. He’s shown us in the past couple of years that he’s ready for this big stage. Came and batted sensibly, showed a lot of patience, and the temperament was tested as well – at no stage [did it look] like he was panicking or going away from his plans, which was good to see,” Rohit said on Jaiswal.
