Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) achieved a sensational victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday. Chasing a target of 186 set by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), LSG initially struggled to keep up with the required run rate. However, a tactical error from Aiden Markram and an explosive batting display from Nicholas Pooran turned the game around for the visitors. Pooran’s blistering knock of 44 runs off just 13 balls sealed the win for LSG with four balls to spare.

The match, however, was marred by the unsporting behaviour of some SRH fans during the first innings and the subsequent “Kohli” chants. Upset with a contentious no-ball call in the 19th over, which left SRH batsmen Heinrich Klaasen and Abdul Samad visibly angry, the fans reportedly threw nuts and bolts at the LSG dugout. The LSG team members managed to escape and sought refuge on the field, leading the umpires to halt the game and intervene. Moments later, the SRH crowd began chanting “Kohli,” targeting LSG and mentor Gautam Gambhir due to their recent spat with the Royal Challengers Bangalore star on May 1.

Contrary to expectations on social media, Gambhir remained composed throughout the game, not reacting or gesturing towards the crowd. However, just before LSG’s victory, bowling coach Morne Morkel called Gambhir from behind while they were seated in the dugout and signaled him to celebrate and rub it in SRH’s face in response to the “Kohli” chants. Gambhir, wearing a smile, obliged, while Naveen-ul-Haq, who was also involved in the altercation with Kohli on May 1, laughed along.

Heinrich Klassen showed disappointment in crowd’s behaviour

The SRH team members were impressed by the incident that unfolded in the stands during their innings. Klaasen expressed his disappointment, stating, “I’m disappointed with the crowd, to be honest. That’s not what you want at your home venue. You want people to want to play at your home venue, so very disappointed. That broke a lot of momentum.” He also criticized some of the umpiring decisions but acknowledged that such challenges are part of the game and teams must move on.

The match showcased both the thrilling nature of the game and the importance of maintaining decorum and respect among fans. The incident highlighted the need for sportsmanship and the impact crowd behaviour can have on the players and the overall experience of the game.
