After losing the first match by 50 runs against Lucknow, the Delhi franchise locked horns against the defending champions Gujarat side in the seventh fixture of the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League (ITL) on Tuesday, April 4 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The visitors won the match by six wickets and Sai Sudarshan was awarded the Player of the Match award for his brilliant unbeaten knock.

If we talk about the match, the Gujarat franchise skipper, Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first. Batting first, the Delhi franchise scored 162 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the first innings. Delhi skipper, David Warner scored 37 runs off 32 balls with seven fours which was the highest score for the home side. Star India all-rounder, Axar Patel also scored a crucial knock of 36 runs from 22 balls with two fours and three sixes. Sarfaraz Khan also scored 30 runs off 34 balls with two fours.

I was thinking about what needs to be done right: Sai Sudarshan

For the Gujarat side, the pick of the bowlers was Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan and India’s veteran speedster Mohammad Shami, who snapped three wickets each in their spell of four overs where they conceded 31 runs and 41 runs respectively. West Indies pacer Alzari Joseph bagged two wickets and conceded 29 runs in his spell of four overs.

While chasing a target of 163 runs, the Gujarat side won the match with 11 balls to spare. The highest scorer for them was Sudarshan, who scored an unbeaten knock of 62 runs from 48 balls which included four fours and two sixes. He was supported by South African batter David Miller. He scored 31 runs off 16 balls with two fours and two sixes.

“Thanks for backing me. A little bit nervous as this is my first award. I was thinking about what needs to be done right. I wasn’t under pressure. It was a bit low and skidding, my plan was to take the game deep. Weathering the storm (was more satisfying). It was seaming initially, I played late and that was the highlight for me,” the 21-year-old asserted in the post match presentation after receiving the Player of the Match award.
