‘Horrible fan base’ – Twitter reacts as PSG fans boo Lionel Messi after he misses an easy attempt in his farewell game

In a shocking 3-2 defeat to Clermont Foot in Ligue 1 on Saturday, June 3, Lionel Messi’s final match with PSG came to an unfortunate end. Fans made fun of him for a terrible miss he made during the game. The Argentine, who will undoubtedly depart Parc des Princes this summer, played his last match for the club as the French champions ended the 2022–23 campaign.

Fans anticipated that Messi would leave PSG on a positive note by scoring a goal or two after manager Christopher Galtier gave him his farewell start in the team’s colours. The 35-year-old, though, drew a blank and had a bad day. Additionally, he missed a significant opportunity to score in the second half when Kylian Mbappe skillfully set him up.

A superbly weighted cross from the Frenchman, who had raced down the left side, reached Messi. He attempted to hit the top corner, but he missed it by a wide margin. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner made a terrible error that perfectly encapsulated his miserable evening. Messi attempted to score from a free kick in the extra time, but Mory Diaw, the custodian for Clermont, stopped him. His error would ultimately cost him, as Clermont completed the comeback minutes later with their third goal, destroying his farewell.

Lionel Messi wanted to leave PSG on a good note, but his farewell game ended in a loss, and his final pictures would be of a horribly wasted opportunity. Even the best players sometimes fail to get the proper farewells, so that wasn’t how it was meant to finish. Sergio Rico was hospitalized after a bizarre horse riding accident, so there were no championship celebrations either, depriving Messi of the ideal send-off.

Earlier, Messi was forced to leave Barcelona without saying goodbye to his supporters either. He didn’t show up for his final game in front of PSG, which caused them to boo him once more. Messi must be relieved to put them behind him for good.
