The Indian women’s cricket team staged an extraordinary comeback against Bangladesh in a T20I, defending a dismal total of 95 runs. After a poor batting effort, India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, bowled brilliantly to limit Bangladesh to 87 runs and claim a historic victory. Deepti Sharma was the hero of the show for India, taking three wickets in the final over. Things appear to be going according to plan as Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma got them off to a good start. However, the visitors lost three wickets in five deliveries between the fifth and sixth overs.
India needed to defend 10 runs in the last over, and Shafali rattled the opponents by taking three wickets in the last six balls, excluding a run out which occurred during the over. Nigar Sultana was the top scorer for the hosts with 38 runs off 55 balls. Apart from Sultana, no other batter scored more than 7 runs. Deepti was virtually unplayable with the ball for the Women in Blue, taking three wickets while allowing only 12 runs in four overs.
Shafali, like Deepti, took three wickets and allowed only 15 runs in her three-over performance. Minnu Mani was the most economical bowler for Bangladesh throughout the innings, picking up two wickets while allowing only nine runs in four overs. India Women have secured the three-match T20I series with one game remaining and will now aim for a 3-0 victory.
Bangladesh Women, on the other hand, got their fair number of chances in this game but were unable to cross the finish line. Nigar Sultana and company will try to escape a whitewash by finishing the series strongly. The third and final T20 of this series will be played at the same site on Thursday, July 13th. At 1.30 p.m. IST, the first ball will be bowled. As always, you are welcome to join us early for the build-up.
The Indian Women team will play 3ODIs starting from July 16th. They would like to forget today’s horrifying performance and focus on the upcoming games.
