‘Impressive performance by Afghanistan’ – Fans Laud Afghanistan For Registering A One-sided Victory Over Sri Lanka In The Asia Cup 2022

On 27 August 2022, the stage was set for the opening of the 15th edition of the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka took on Afghanistan for the opening match of this tournament. However, Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi won the toss and elected to bowl first. Meanwhile, his bowlers did not disappoint him.

Speaking of the Sri Lankan batters, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis came out to open the innings. But, Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi was in great form as he took two wickets in his first over only. Sri Lanka lost their three wickets for five runs in two overs only.

However, in the second over a controversial thing happened regarding Pathum Nisanka’s dismissal. In that over, the umpire gave him out for a cough behind. Nissanka took a review with confidence to get it overturned. But, during the review, there was no spike. Still, the TV umpire told the on-field umpire to stick with his decision. All fans and Sri Lankan players were in utter shock. But, other batters failed completely to manage the innings as Sri Lanka got bundled out for 105 runs only in 19.4 overs. Only Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne scored 38 and 31 runs respectively. Farooqi was the star bowler for Afghanistan. He picked up three wickets for 11 runs in 3.4 overs.

In reply, Afghanistan openers were in hurry to chase down the small target of 106 runs. They reached 83 runs in just 6 overs without losing any wickets. Then, Rahmanullah Gurbaz lost his wicket to Hasaranga. He scored 40 runs off 18 balls at a strike rate of 222.22. Another opener Hazratullah Zazai remained not out on 37 runs off 28 balls. They managed to chase it down in just 10.1 overs. Therefore, they won the match by eight wickets. Farroqi won the player of the match award for his impressive bowling display.
