The Indian T20 League is known as one of the biggest cricket leagues around the globe. Every year, players from different countries come to play this tournament along with Indian players. In 2022, the Gujarat franchise won the tournament at their first attempt only. Now, ahead of the next season, there are reports that the Indian cricket Board is looking to introduce an ‘Impact Player’ or a substitute player option in the T20 formats.

They are looking to start this new rule in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament along with other domestic tournaments. They are considering this decision to make the whole format more attractive and dynamic for players and fans.

“Introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting” – the Indian Cricket Board wrote

As per reported by the Indian Express, the next edition of the Indian T20 League will look to adopt this new rule. The Board also sent an official circular to all the states. They wrote: “With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions. It will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers. But also for the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint.”

They also added: “Teams need to identify playing XI and 4 substitutes at the time of the toss. Out of the 4 substitutes named in the team sheet, only one of the players can be used as an Impact player.” As per rule, whenever a team will look to use a substitute player, that team’s captain, coach, and management need to inform the fourth umpire or the on-field officials.

The official circular further read: “An Impact Player may bowl a full allotment of 4 overs in an uninterrupted inning irrespective of the number of overs previously bowled by the player he is replacing. If a bowler is suspended because of any breach of law, then he cannot be replaced by the Impact Player. The player who is replaced by an Impact Player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match. He is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder. If a player gets injured while fielding in mid-over, the current playing condition prevails under 24.1 – substitute fielders.”
