The Indian T20 League 2022 reached its 50th match with the contest between Delhi and Hyderabad at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The match turned out to be a rather one-sided affair on a batting-friendly wicket. One team dominated the majority of the match and practically batted the opposition out of the contest.

Kane Williamson won the toss and put Delhi to bat first. Delhi lost their first wicket very early in the form of Mandeep Singh (o off 5). But this did not deter David Warner from playing his natural game. He attacked the Hyderabad bowlers and kept the momentum going for his team. Mitchell Marsh (10 off 7) and Rishabh Pant (26 off 16) failed to make any significant impact with the bat. As Pant walked back to the pavilion in the ninth over the innings Delhi’s score was 85 for 3. The West Indian Rovman Powell walked out to bat at this stage and joined hands with David Warner in the middle.

The duo brought down carnage on the Hyderabad bowlers from thereon. Powell and Warner formed a stellar partnership of 122 runs off just 66 deliveries. They helped Delhi to a formidable total of 207 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their 20 overs. Warner remained unbeaten at 92 from 58 deliveries, hitting 12 overs and three sixes. Powell at the other end stood up to his reputation being a power hitter. He scored 67 runs off 35 deliveries hitting three fours and six sixes in the process.

Hyderabad was playing catch up form the very beginning of their innings. With the dismissal of Abhishek Sharma (7 of 6) in the second over the Men in Orange started to fall weak in the chase. They lost Kane Williamson (4 of 11) and Rahul Tripathi (22 of 18) within the seventh over of the innings and made the target even tough for themselves. As the 10th over of the innings concluded Hyderabad was 63 for 3 down and the remaining equation of 145 runs from 60 balls at a required rate of 14.5 runs per over already looked too big a task. Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram were out in the middle and it was completely on the duo to take the match as close as possible.

The duo looked dangerous in the middle and the complexion of the match started changing ever so slightly. Markram (42 of 25) looked in great form but was dismissed in the 13th over of the innings by Khaleel Ahmed.  However, Pooran kept Hyderabad’s hopes alive playing an excellent brand of attacking cricket. As the 15th over concluded Hyderabad was stationed at 134 for 5. The still required 74 runs from 5 overs at a required rate of over 14 runs per over. Nicholas Pooran displayed his hitting capabilities in his knock 0f 62 off 34 balls. He hit two fours and six sixes but failed to take his team home as the equation proved too much for him. Kahleel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi as he got 3 wickets for 30 runs from his four overs. Hyderabad’s chase came to a stop at 186 runs from their 20 overs and they lost the match by 21 runs. This was their third consecutive defeat, while Delhi won their fifth in 10 matches.
