Gujarat and Lucknow faced off for the first time in the history of the Indian T20 League at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The clash gave the fans a final over thriller.
The toss went Gujarat’s way and they decided to field first. Hardik’s decision was proved right by Mohammed Shami bowled a brilliant opening spell. He picked three wickets upfront and reduced Lucknow to 29 for 4 in the fifth over. The fans were all praises for Shami and drew his comparison to a dragon breathing fire. Deepak Hooda and youngster Ayush Badoni steadied the Lucknow ship at this point. Hooda showed great maturity as he scored 55 off 41 deliveries. Ayush Badoni was equally good as he scored 54 runs off 41 deliveries. Their efforts were followed by a cameo from Krunal Pandya (23 off 13) and the team reached a total of 158 runs from their 20 overs. The fans praised Hooda’s maturity but they were disappointed not being able to watch Hooda and Krunal bat together.
Gujarat’s start was similar to Lucknow’s as Dushmantha Chameera picked up 2 wickets very quickly. Gujarat was 15 for 2 wickets down, when the skipper, Hardik Pandya joined Matthew Wade at the crease. Hardik looked in good touch from the beginning and steadied the ship with Wade. He was dismissed by Krunal Pandya at a personal score of 33 runs from 28 deliveries. After this Rahul Tewatia and David Miller went about the business calmy taking the match deep. In the 16th and 17th over 39 runs were scored in total. This change the momentum and Gujarat ran away with the match from there. Miller was dismissed for 30 off 21 by Aves Khan, but Tewatia kept his nerve till the end. With young Abhinav Manohar playing a cameo in the end (15 off 7) Gujarat won the match with 5 wickets in hand and two balls to spare.
