Kolkata faced Gujarat in the 35th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai. It was a sporting wicket providing the bowlers enough help to make the contest between bat and ball interesting.

Gujarat won the toss in the match and became the first team in the tournament to decide on batting first. Their start to innings was not great as they lost their opener Shubman Gill (7 off 5) early in the second over. Hardik Pandya walked out and stitched a great partnership of 75 runs with Wriddhiman Saha. Saha (25 off 25) was the second wicket to fall for Gujarat in the 11th over of the innings with the score of the team being 83. Pandya was then involved in another important partnership of 50 runs with the new batter David Miller and laid a great foundation for the team. Miller (27 off 20) fell prey to Shivam Mavi in the 17th over of the innings. After the end of the over Gujarat had 137 runs on the board for the loss of just three wickets and were very well positioned to put a formidable total on the board.

But the Kolkata bowlers were brilliant in the last three overs conceding just 19 runs and picking up six wickets in them. The last over from Andre Russell deserves particular mention where he picked up four wickets conceding just five runs. Hardik Pandya scored a brilliant 67 runs off 49 deliveries hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes. He played the biggest role in taking his team to a total of 156 runs in their 20 overs.

Kolkata’s response to the chase began in the worst way possible. They failed to form a partnership at the beginning and were very soon down to 34 for four in the seventh over of the innings. Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh stitched partnership of 45 runs and stabilized the innings before Rinku (35 off 27) was dismissed by Yash Dayal in the 13th over. He bowled a superb short bowl to the new man Andre Russell and got him caught at fine leg on the fourth delivery of the over. But fate had planned a longer stay for Russell at the crease, as the ball was called a no-ball. The West Indian soon made the bowler realize his mistake as he slammed him for two sixes in the last two balls of the over. At the end of the 15th over Kolkata was 107 for 5 down needing 50 runs off the last 30 balls. With Russell out in the middle the target looked achievable.

Russell was making the Gujarat team for the no-ball dismissal and was going big. However, the bowlers were executing their plans against the West Indian nicely keeping him relatively quiet. The fall of wickets at the other end meant that Kolkata kept falling behind the chase and needed 18 runs in the last over. Russell hit a six of the very first for a six and it looked like another heist is on the cards. But in the very next ball Lockie Fergusson put up a brilliant fielding effort to dismiss Russell (48 off 25 deliveries). His dismissal meant that Kolkata lost the match by eight runs losing their fifth of the tournament. Gujarat’s dream run continues as they win their sixth of the seven matches they have played in the tournament.
