Lucknow and Mumbai locked horns in the 37th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match was a completely one-sided affair as one of the teams steamrolled over the other.

Mumbai won the toss and decided to field first. Lucknow had an average start to their innings as they lost Quinton de Kock (10 off 9) in the fourth over of the innings. Manish Pandey joined hands with KL Rahul in the middle and they formed a partnership of 58 runs. Pandey was the second wicket to fall for Lucknow in the 12th over of the innings as the team’s score read 85 for two. KL Rahul continued strong at one end while he kept running out of partners. Between the 13th to 16th over of the innings, Lucknow lost three wickets for just 19 runs. From being 121 for five in the 16th over Lucknow reached a total of 168 runs in their 20 overs courtesy of the death-over hitting from KL Rahul. Rahul scored 103 runs from 62 deliveries hitting 12 fours and four sixes in the process.

Mumbai started their chase steadily and looked well on course during the initial phase. While Ishan Kishan struggled to score runs it was Rohit Sharma who kept the scoreboard ticking for Mumbai. The duo stitched a partnership of 49 runs in seven overs, before Ishan Kishan (8 off 20) was dismissed. After this Mumbai suffered a mini collapse as they lost the next three wickets in a span of three overs and were down to 67 for four within the 12th over. The two main pillars of the batting order in Rohit Sharma (39 off 31) and Suyrakumar Yadav (7off 7) was back in the dug out. The big man in Kieron Pollard walked out to bat and Mumbai was depending heavily on him to win their first match of the tournament. As the innings reached the end of 15 overs Mumbai was 98 for 4 down requiring 71 runs of the last five overs. Tilak Varma was looking good in the middle and with Kieron Pollard out their with him the target looked possible.

But Pollard was not middling the ball and it was Varma who was trying to keep Mumbai in the hunt. The West Indian’s lack of intent in the batting was putting the men in blue under  more pressure. The pressure ultimately got the better of young Tilak Varma (38 off 27) as he was dismissed in the 18th over by Jason Holder. Pollard played an ‘un-Pollardly’ innings and scored 19 runs off 20 balls . Mumbai was restricted to 138 for 8 in their 20 overs and they lost their eighth straight match of the tournament. Lucknow on the other hand picked up their fifth victory from eight matches in the tournament.
