Punjab played Rajasthan in the 52nd match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both the teams looking to consolidate their place in the top four battled it down to the last over in a high-scoring thriller.
Punjab had a great start to their innings as the opening pair in Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan got them past the 40 runs mark within the first five overs. Shikhar Dhawan(12 of 16) fell prey to Ravichandran Ashwin in the sixth over of the innings when the team’s score was 47 runs. The other batters of the team Bhanuka Rajapaksa (27 of 18) and Mayank Agarwal (15 of 13) batted around Jonny Bairstow. The English opener completed his fifty and continued steadily. He scored 56 runs from 40 deliveries before being dismissed in the 15th over. Jitesh Sharma (38 off 18) and Liam Livingstone (22 of 14) played fiery little cameos to take Punjab to a formidable total of 189 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal was once again at his best picking up three wickets for 28 runs in his four overs. Prasidh Krishna and Ravichandran Ashwin also picked up one wicket each.
Rajasthan began their chase well as the openers of the team gave them a blazing start. They crossed the 40 runs mark within the first four overs. Buttler(30 of 16) was looking in good touch before he was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada. The momentum that Buttler gave the Men in Pink with his explosive start was carried forward by the skipper Sanju Samson with his blazing knock of 23 runs from 12 deliveries. Samson went back to the pavilion in the ninth over of the innings dismissed by Rishi Dhawan. Yashasvi Jaiswal looked steady at the other end and continued strong as Padikkal joined him. On the second delivery of the 15th over, Jaiswal was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh after he played a brilliant knock of 68 runs from 41 balls.
As the over concluded Rajasthan was poised at 143 runs for the loss of 3 wickets and required 47 runs from 30 balls. Padikkal was not looking fluent in the middle and the majority of the responsibility was on Shimron Hetmyer to take Rajasthan home. He stayed there till the end and scored 31 runs of ththe 16 deliveries. Rajasthan won the match by six wickets with two balls remaining. This was the seventh victory for the Men in Pink in 11 matches while Punjab lost their sixth in 11 games.
