‘Is this what is called kalyug?’ – Former India player raises questions after Mitchell Starc’s and Pat Cummins’ stellar deal at IPL Auction 2024
One of the major highlights from the Mini Auction for Indian Premier League 2024 was bid for Australian duo, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. Both the Australia quicks accumulated the highest and the second-highest bids in the history of the tournament. At the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai on Tuesday, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured Starc for a price of ₹24.75 crore, while the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) spent ₹20.50 crore to acquire Cummins’ services earlier in the day.
Speaking about this, the ace commentator, Aakash Chopra has raised concerns about Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins receiving significantly higher pay than India’s top stars in the IPL. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, the former India opener conveyed his disappointment about overseas players, including Starc and Cummins, earning more than Indian stalwarts such as Jasprit Bumrah, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in the IPL.
“Mitchell Starc – 24.75 crore rupees. Pat Cummins – 20.50 crore rupees. Jasprit Bumrah is 12 crores, MS Dhoni is also 12 crores, Virat Kohli – 17 (15) crores, and Rohit Sharma is also 16 crores. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Sam Curran, Cameron Green – all of them are more expensive than them. Is this what is called kalyug? “Who is the No. 1 T20 bowler in the world at the moment? Who is the No. 1 bowler of this IPL? That player’s name is Jasrpit Bumrah, and Bumrah gets 12 and Starc gets close to 25. It is wrong. I don’t grudge anybody’s money. I will be the happiest if everyone gets as much money as they can get, but how is this right?,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
This is not Done: Suresh Raina
Moreover, the former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina also echoed Aakash Chopra’s views on IPL player salaries. Raina questioned the fairness of foreign players earning more than Indian counterparts like Bumrah and Dhoni. Raina also raised concerns about the hefty payments to players like Mitchell Starc, absent from the league for almost a decade, questioning the franchise’s rationale.
“Jasprit Bumrah for INR 12 crore, MS Dhoni for INR 12 crore, Mohammed Shami for INR 5 crore. And the player who was not a part of the league for 8 years and played just 26 matches was given almost 25 crore. This is not done,” Raina said.
