‘It hasn’t surprised me’: Shane Watson on Mumbai’s dismal performance

Mumbai is having a torrid time in the Indian T20 League 2022. They have played six matches in the tournament so far and have lost them all. The men in blue are finding it hard to get it right in all aspects of the game and it appears that their bases have not been covered well in the auction. The current Delhi Assistant Coach Shane Watson has spoken up on Mumbai’s terrible show this season. He says that the team’s performance has not been a surprise to him.

His views on the auction strategy of the most successful franchise of the tournament have resonated with millions of fans. The Australian all-rounder has raised questions over the strategy to spend a massive sum of INR 15.25 Cr on Ishan Kishan as his form has been on and off this season and his performances have not justified his price tag so far in the tournament.

During a recent conversation on the YouTube channel, ‘The Grade Cricketer, Watson said – “It hasn’t surprised me that Mumbai are at the bottom of the table because they had a shocking auction. Spending so much money on Ishan Kishan…. He is a very talented and skillful player, but he’s not worth blowing your whole salary on.”

And then, going for Jofra Archer, not knowing whether he is not going to come back in. He hasn’t played cricket for quite a while. They have got quite a few holes in the team,”- Watson further added.

Shane Watson has been a part of the Chennai team during his last years in the Indian T20 League. He also spoke on his former team’s equally dismal show in the 15th edition of the tournament.

“They paid a lot for him (Deepak Chahar) at the auction, but he is unavailable for a lot of the tournament, which is a big hole. They don’t have a quality overseas quick like Josh Hazlewood. Earlier, they always had a world-class overseas quick bowler. That’s why they are struggling.”
