‘I’ve enjoyed having that fight between him and me’: Suryakumar Yadav on his banter with Yuzvendra Chahal
Rajasthan and Mumbai faced off in the 44th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. It was a battle of nerves in a match that kept everybody interested till the last over. However, with four runs left in left in the last over, Daniel Sama hit a six on the first ball of his innings to take Mumbai to their first win of the tournament.
As the fans were relieved to see the most successful team register their first points in the tournament at last an incident involving Suryakumar Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal grabbed everybody’s attention. Notably, Yadav was the prime architect of Mumbai’s win in the match. He played a steady and determined knock of 51 runs of 39 deliveries stabilizing the innings in the middle overs.
Speaking of the incident it was the last ball of the eighth over of the Mumbai innings where Surya failed to connect an attempted sweep and the ball hit his pads. Yuzvendra Chahal immediately appealed but the umpire’s verdict was not out. But the bowler was confident about his appeal and hence convinced the Rajasthan skipper to go for a DRS call. However, the replays showed that the ball was marginally clipping the top of the off-stump and it was given the umpire’s call.
As Chahal got disappointed with the decision Suryakumar walked up to him and gave him a warm hug to cheer him up. He later opened up about the incident during the post-match conference. Yadav said – “During the game, I didn’t tell him anything and it was just a sweet banter between him and me, but I’m really happy that I got away with the umpire’s call and the way things went after that. He is a great bowler and I’ve enjoyed having that fight between him and me in the middle.”
While speaking about Mumbai’s first win in the tournament, Yadav said- “The win will spread a lot of positivity. We were already enjoying each other’s company during practice sessions and team dinners. This win will help each and everyone learn going forward in the season.”
