The three-match T20I series versus Ireland in August would likely mark Team India bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback to competitive cricket, according to News18 CricketNext on Sunday. Due to a back issue, Bumrah has not been in action since September of last year. On September 25, he last took part in a home T20I match against Australia. Bumrah had back surgery in March, and in April he started his six-week rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Bumrah missed both the Indian World Test Championship (WTC) final versus Australia and the Indian Premier League (IPL), which Rohit Sharma and company lost by a score of 209 runs. An official source from the Indian Cricket Board spoke to News 18 regarding the pacer. He said that, “Jasprit Bumrah is looking very good for the Ireland series in August this year. It will be a big boost to the Indian cricket team and will also allow Bumrah time in the middle after the long injury lay-off. If everything stays on course, a Bumrah at peak fitness is likely to take field.”

Bumrah would earn playing time in front of the Asia Cup as well as ODI World Cup later in the year if he were to participate in the T20 Internationals against Ireland. On Bumrah’s journey to recovering full fitness, NCA chairman VVS Laxman as well as Nitin Patel of the Head Sports Sciences and Medicine department have maintained a close eye. Nitin has served as the head physio for the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Indian team in the past.  S Rajnikanth, a physiotherapist employed by the NCA, has assisted Hardik Pandya as well as Shreyas Iyer in regaining complete health, and he is currently assisting Bumrah in trying to do the same.

Bumrah’s persistent back problem prevented him from travelling with India’s side to face Sri Lanka in a home series in January. The Mumbai Indians never had any intentions of rushing Bumrah back into action because they, too, were patient with him and his longevity.
