India is set to face England in the fifth rescheduled Test match on July 1, 2022, at Edgbaston in Birmingham. This match got canceled last year due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and now, it has been rescheduled. A three-match ODI and three-match T20I series are also scheduled after this.

However, India received a setback as their regular skipper, Rohit Sharma tested Covid-19 positive during the warm-up match against Leicestershire. Hence, he did not come to bat during the second innings of that match. After that, several reports were there suggesting Jasprit Bumrah to be the captain for this match if Rohit misses out eventually.

Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead Team India in the fifth Test match

On 29 June 2022 Indian head coach Rahul Dravid talked with reporters and said that Rohit is yet to be ruled out. But, the next day morning, as per reports, Rohit Sharma went to Warwickshire instead of going to Birmingham with the rest of the Team.

Now, the Indian Cricket Board came up with a confirmation tweet that Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side in the absence of Rohit. Rishabh Pant will be his deputy for the match.

Here is the tweet:

Speaking about the match, England had already announced their playing XI for this match as James Anderson made a comeback in place of Overton. England is coming off a thrashing series win over the Kiwis on their home soil. They will be eager to win this match to avoid a series loss against the Indians as India is currently leading this series at a margin of 2-1.

On the other hand, India is on the verge of winning a historical series on English soil.  Now, as Rohit Sharma’s absence has been confirmed by the Board, it will be a huge task for the newly appointed captain Jasprit Bumrah and his boys to overcome this in-form England side in this upcoming Test match. India needs to find a replacement for Rohit to field a strong possible XI at Edgbaston.
