‘Just one bad day can ruin your chances’ – Ravi Shastri believes India stand great chance in WTC final against Australia
Later this month, when Team India plays Australia in the World Test Championship final, the team will be looking to snap an almost 10-year trophy drought for any major world titles. Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the team to its most recent Champions Trophy victory in 2013. Since then, India has had a pair of captaincy changes, with Virat Kohli following Dhoni and Rohit Sharma then taking over as captain.
In reference to the forthcoming WTC Final, former India coach Ravi Shastri, who was in charge when the team lost the WTC two years ago, thinks the team has an opportunity to end the major world title drought. He also said there aren’t any obvious favourites in a one-off Test.
‘I thought the team was good enough to win an ICC trophy’ – Ravi Shastri
Former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri spoke about how the Indian team is good but luck favoured the opposition. He said, “You have to compete. Sometimes, you need a little bit of luck going your way as well. I won’t say we didn’t play good cricket. We have played very good cricket. The rub of green hasn’t quite gone their way. I always say this team is good enough to win an ICC trophy. When I was there, I used to say the same thing… especially in last 3-4 years, I thought the team was good enough to win an ICC trophy. Those players are still there.”
Ravi Shastri then triggered a warning towards Australia and spoke about how they need to be careful as well. He said, “Everyone’s saying Australia are clear favourites because we are playing in England. But it’s a one-off Test, just one bad day can ruin your chances. Australia also needs to be very careful.”
Due to the Indian Premier League scheduling and preparation for the WTC final, the Indian team travelled to England in multiple groups. India will play in this match for the first time in over two months.
