‘Let’s do it for women’s cricket!’, star India all rounder Yuvraj Singh asks fans to support women’s team ahead of world cup semi-finals against Australia
The Indian women’s cricket team has advanced to the Women’s 20-20 World Cup semifinals in South Africa. After three victories in four games, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side finished second in Group B’s points standings after defeating Ireland by five runs in their last group match. This secured their place in the semi-final.
Yet, a recent Google search for “Indian Cricket team captains” by a fan led to controversy because the search results only included the men’s captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Hardik Pandya. In response, former cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina supported the women’s team captain Harmanpreet.
“If we’ve created this problem, we also have the power to fix it. Let’s do it for women’s cricket! Use this hashtag: #IndianCricketTeamCaptainHarmanpreetKaur on #Twitter #Quora #LinkedIn and #Reddit to spread the word and make a difference!” Yuvraj Singh tweeted.
Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina also came out to support Harmanpreet and urged people to join the cause “Join the movement. post the video on Twitter, LinkedIn, Linkedin, or Reddit with #IndianCricketTeamCaptainHarmanpreetKaur,” he tweeted.
Savita Punia, the captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team, also tweeted. “Going after a huge cause! Let’s make it happen together #IndianCricketTeamCaptainHarmanpreetKaur,” she wrote.
Indian Women’s set to face Australia in semi-finals
Australia and India will square off in the tournament’s opening semi-final. South Africa, the host nation of the competition, made a stunning comeback after losing to Sri Lanka in their initial group match. They secured a spot in the semifinals after chasing down 114 in their final Group A match. In the tournament’s second semi-final game on Friday, the Proteas will take against England.
Notably, India Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is in red-hot form along with pacer Renuka Singh Thakur leading India in the tournament till now. However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur is struggling to find her rhythm, and India will be looking for a great knock from her in the semi-finals against the mighty Aussies.
