‘Maza aaya waise match dekhke’ – Fans react as Bangladesh win by 3 wickets to knock Sri Lanka out of ODI World Cup 2023
Bangladesh won the match against Sri Lanka by 3 wickets to knock them out of the ODI World Cup 2023. for the first time in the history of cricket, Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup. A good team effort from Bangladesh helped them to beat Sri Lanka. But the match was filled with a lot of controversies, which caught the attention of the fans more than the match itself.
Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a total of 279 runs. On a wicket like Delhi, it was a par score. Charith Asalanka scored his maiden hundred in the World Cup, which was filled with fun. In his stay in the middle, the southpaw scored 108 runs in 105 balls, which included 6 fours and 5 sixes. Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 41 runs each.
But the talking point of the innings was Angelo Mathews’ dismissal. The experienced batter created an unwanted record of becoming the first batter to be dismissed via ‘Timed out’. Mathews could not face a ball in 2 minutes after arriving in the middle. Hence, the umpire declared him out after receiving an appeal from Shakib Al Hasan. 280 was not going to be a difficult chase for Bangladesh.
Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto lift Bangladesh up
Having suffered 6 losses in a row in the tournament till now, Bangladesh needed an inspirational performance from their captain. The experienced batter provided exactly that. With the ball, Shakib claimed 2 wickets. With the bat, Shakib Al Hasan played a fantastic innings and scored 82 runs in 65 balls. At the other end, Najmul Shanto played a good knock and scored 90 runs in 101 balls.
The duo put on a 169-run stand for the third wicket, which nearly took Bangladesh home. But the wicket of Shakib led to a mini-collapse. From 210/2 at one stage, Bangladesh collapsed to 269/7, losing 5 wickets while scoring 59 runs in the process. But the likes of Towhid Hridoy and Tanzim Hasan Sakib ensured that Bangladesh got over the line. Bangladesh thrillingly won the match and did themselves a favour to be in the race for qualifying for the Champions Trophy 2025.
