Recently, it was reported that the Chennai franchise, which owns the Johannesburg team in South Africa, signed Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali. Notably, the development isn’t made official yet as Cricket South Africa has asked the teams to follow the confidentiality clause as of now. This clause means that the teams can’t reveal their signings as of now.

Meanwhile, in another development, it is reported that the franchise might reveal the name of the team this week. One of the team officials has said that they are speaking with Stephen Fleming, who happens to be the head coach of the Chennai team in the Indian T20 League. The official said that there can no better person than the former New Zealand skipper to carry forward the team’s legacy.

“You will know the official name by this week. We are currently in talks with Stephen (Fleming) as we can’t think of any better person carrying forward the Chennai legacy in a new venture,” a Chennai official told InsideSport.

On the other hand, it is believed that former India skipper MS Dhoni will be part of the team. However, not as a player. Further on, the official maintained that he might need the Indian Cricket Board’s approval.

“Dhoni’s involvement will depend on BCCI’s clearance. He won’t be playing but could be in some role if BCCI permits,” the franchise official said.

The readers might be aware of the fact that the Indian players contracted anyway with the board aren’t allowed to play in the foreign T20 Leagues. The players who are allowed to play in the foreign leagues have to retire from Indian cricket. Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Manpreet Gony, and Pravin Tambe retired from Indian cricket a few years ago. They went on to play in different leagues such as Global T20 Canada, Caribbean Premier League and Lanka Premier League. It will be interesting to see whether Dhoni gets permission to be part of the South African franchise as a support staff.
