Nathan Lyon gives brutal Gabba reminder when asked about Cheteshwar Pujara completing 100 Tests
One of India’s long-time servants of Test cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara, reached a historic landmark in his cricketing career, playing his 100th Test match on Friday. It came against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Delhi and received a special cap from India’s great Sunil Gavaskar after a felicitation ceremony ahead of the Test match.
For Pujara, his 100th Test did not exactly go as planned as he was out for a 7-ball duck, courtesy of Nathan Lyon who struck him in front of the wicket on pads. Pujara, who would have dreamt of a century, will have to wait until his second innings of the match to make his special match worthwhile.
When told that Lyon may have shattered Pujara’s fairytale 100th Test match, the star Australia spinner reminded how his 100th Test match. He said that fairytales do not always go as expected.
I have had some unbelievable battles with Pujara: Nathan Lyon
“Well, Gabba was my 100th Test. My dream of defending 300 at the Gabba was also shattered,” said Lyon who was quoted as saying by NDTV. “I know it is his 100th Test. Fairytales don’t come the way (you) like. But over the years, I have had some unbelievable battles with Pujara. It’s been pretty amazing.”
Speaking about the match, Australia signed off Day 2 with a commanding position after taking 1-run lead going into their second innings. On a wicket that is getting increasingly difficult to bat on, offering a lot to the spinners, it could be a challenge for the home side to chase down the target.
“Bowling around the wicket in this game, I’m still trying to target off stump. That’s my goal. If you understand cricket, you will understand what I am trying to do and trying to get them defending because we know how good the Indian batters are. If I can make them defend, hopefully, I’ll create a few chances here and there,” added Lyon.
