Indian cricket fraternity was left stunned when Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down as Test captain. While his form with the bat was not great, he led the team well and took them to wins in Australia, England and South Africa in the last couple of years.

However, with Kohli stepping down, the board now has to find an apt replacement. Rohit Sharma, being the vice-captain, is the frontrunner to take over the role. However, he is already the limited-overs skipper and a few reports state that BCCI want spit captaincy thus, KL Rahul could also come into play.

However, there are a few other candidates as well. Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar on Sunday stated that Rishabh Pant can be a good choice. Speaking to Aaj Tak, Gavaskar said that added responsibility of leading the side will help Rishabh Pant. Gavaskar’s opinion was quoted by senior journalist Vikrant Gupta.

Replying to Vikrant’s tweet, Yuvraj Singh sided with Gavaskar’s opinion and said Pant reads the game well and is a good choice for the next India skipper.

Pant has some experience of leading as well. He was given the responsibility of leading Delhi in the Indian T2o League 2021 after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the tournament owing to a shoulder injury. Pant did well and took the team to the playoffs. India’s next Test assignment is against Sri Lanka next month and the board is likely to announce the skipper after the South Africa tour.
