Gujarat faced Punjab in the 16th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The match was a thriller of a contest and it kept the fans glued to the action till the end.

Gujarat won the toss and their skipper Hardik Pandya decided to field first. Mayank Agarwal’s miserable run in the tournament continued as Hardik Pandya dismissed him for 5 runs off 9 deliveries in the 2nd over of the innings. Jonny Bairstow, who played his first match of this season did not get the start he wanted. Lockie Ferguson took the wicket of Bairstow (8 off 8). Liam Livingstone was the next batter and he picked up from where he left in the last match. He smashed the Gujarat bowlers for fun to all parts of the ground. He was ultimately dismissed in the 16th over by Rashid Khan. In another blazing knock, Livingstone scored 64 runs off 27 deliveries. Just like the last match after Livingstone’s dismissal, Punjab lost a bit of momentum. But with the help of a late flourish by Kagiso Rabada (22 off 14) and Arshdeep Singh (10 off 5), Punjab reached a good score of 189 runs in their 20 overs. Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat picking up 3 wickets for 22 runs from 4 overs.

Gujarat made great start to their chase. Although Matthew Wade (6 off 7) was dismissed in the 4th over by Kagiso Rabada, Shubman Gill looked in great flow. He completed his half-century in just 29 deliveries and got an able partner in Sai Sudarshan. At the half-way stage of their innings Gujarat was placed strongly at 94 for 1. They required 96 more to win the match from 60 deliveries. The two batter at the crease looked comfortable. But Sai Sudarshan was dismissed in the 15th over by Rahul Chahar. He scored 35 off 30 deliveries and along with Gill had set the stage for the finishers of the team. After the 15th over finished Gujarat was 134 for 2 down. They needed 56 runs from the last 30 deliveries. Gill was still going strong and had Hardik Pandya with him. But for Gujarat boundaries dried up and they were losing momentum at the stage. Kagiso Rabada picked up Shubman Gill in the 19th over. Gill scored a brilliant 96 runs off59 deliveries. His innings had 11 fours and 1 six in it. Gujarat was left with 19 to score off the final 6 deliveries. Hardik was run out on the first delivery of the final over and the balance shifted towards Punjab. But Rahul Tewatia had other ideas, with 12 required of the of the last 2 deliveries, he slammed Odean Smith for two sixes. It was astonishing stuff from the left hander. Gujarat stays undefeated in the tournament after winning the match by 6 wickets.
